Chandigarh Police arrest two habitual offenders for snatching phone

Carrying out snatchings since the age of 15, a habitual offender and his accomplice were arrested for snatching a mobile phone near Gurukul Global School in Manimajra on Wednesday.

The accused have been identified as Shoaib, 24, and Jaspreet Singh, 25, both residents of Manimajra. They were arrested on Wednesday from the parking lot near Shivalik Garden and sent to two days in police remand. They revealed that they had snatched another phone at the same spot on February 10.

The complainant, Imran of New Indira Colony, Manimajra, said he was walking with his brother near the school when the duo came on a scooter and snatched his phone. He added that the phone’s cover contained 1,500. Police have recovered the snatched phone and scooter from them.

Police said that Shoaib works as an auto driver and involved in nine previous cases of snatching and thefts dating back to 2012. Singh, who works at a tea stall, had also been booked for criminal breach of trust case in 2019. As per police, both men are drug addicts and committed snatchings to support their habit.

Two snatchers arrested by people’s intervention

Two snatching incidents were averted by the intervention of the public on Thursday. One Balwant Singh of Milk Colony, Dhanas, said that his phone was snatched outside his house. He raised an alarm and the snatcher, Subhash (26) of Sector 25, was apprehended by the public and handed over to the police. At Kajheri village in Sector 52, one Bablu alleged that Vishal of Attawa village, Sector 42, tried to steal his uncle’s phone near Kajheri Chowk. Bablu caught Vishal and handed him over to the police. Cases under Section 379A (snatching) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) have been registered in both incidents.
