Mansa Devi Police arrested a man on Thursday for attacking his stepdaughter with a knife after she expressed her desire to marry a man of her choice, a decision vehemently opposed by him.

According to the victim, Kanwar Pal attacked her with a knife, inflicting wound to her neck.

Her screams alerted siblings, neighbours and other residents, who rushed her to the Panchkula civil hospital in Sector 6.

Due to the severity of her injuries, she was subsequently transferred to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh

Kanwar Pal fled the scene after the attack but was apprehended by police. The victim’s mother had passed away several years prior.

Police have registered a case against the accused under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including 115 (voluntarily causing hurt), 118 (1) (voluntarily causing hurt or grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 109 (1) (attempt to murder) and 351 (3) (criminal intimidation), and under the Arms Act.

He was presented before a court and remanded to judicial custody.
