Writing about the financial constraints faced by students that lead to them to drop out of school was an easy task for Deepak, but little did he know that his insights into the problem would fetch him a chance to share about the difficulties of students who are not able to make it to higher studies with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The 17-year-old city lad is on cloud nine after he was informed that he has been selected for an interaction with the Prime Minister at the 6th edition of Pariksha Pe Charcha in New Delhi on January 27.

The event is an interactive event where selected students from all around the country discuss theexamination stress and life after school.

A non-medical student, Deepak studies in class 12 at the Government Senior Secondary Smart School, Jawahar Nagar.

His story is also no less than a struggle as he cycles almost 20 kilometres every day to go to school and come back.

The student said that his school in Dhandari Kalan was only till class 10 and he had no option but to get admission in a school that was away from his home.

“My father lost his job four years back. With four elder sisters and one younger brother, my family could not afford fees at a private school,” he said.

A resident of Giaspura, he was unaware that such an opportunity ever existed, till he read about it on his teacher’s WhatsApp status. The status invited all to apply for the same.

Deepak promptly reached out to his Physics teacher Cherry Mittal and submitted his form under the theme - Education Without Boundaries. In his submission in the English language, he wrote about the reasons behind low percentage of students going for higher studies in the country.

“Fulfilling the task of writing the essay on the problem was not hard, as several people I know could not study after class 12 due to limited seats in government colleges,” he said.

“I wrote about how financial constraints push students to seek low-level jobs once they have completed school and they lose touch with their studies. I also shared anecdotes from my own experience as I was also facing the same dilemma,” he added.

The entries for the program were open till November, Deepak said, adding that he was informed by his school a week ago that my profile has been selected for the event.

“I am delighted to have got this opportunity and bracing myself for the event. I will leave for Delhi on January 24,” he added.

Deepak said he aims to become a civil engineer and hopes to get admission to a government-aided college.

Principal at Government Senior Secondary School, Jawahar Nagar, Kuldeep Singh said, “it is a matter of pride for the school as Deepak is among the two students selected from Punjab, the other being a girl from Jalandhar.”

In his letter, the director general of school education has directed the district education officers across the state to attend the event which will be broadcast on all government channels and websitesthrough remote mode. School heads have been asked to upload pictures of students watching the program on the mygov portal.
