Delhi Traffic Police integrates ANPR cameras on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway with its e-challan system, issuing speeding fines to enhance road safety.

To strengthen road safety and enforce speed limits, the Delhi Traffic Police has integrated the automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras installed on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway (DDE) within its jurisdiction with its e-challan system, allowing it to issue online fines for speed limit violations.

The integration was completed on Monday, and more than 1,000 fines were issued for speeding till Tuesday, two senior traffic police officers told HT.

“We are also in the process of further strengthening the enforcement mechanism to identify and prosecute vehicles that are restricted from plying on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway. There are six ANPR cameras installed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) at two locations on the DDE that fall under our territorial jurisdiction,” said special commissioner of police (traffic) Manish Agarwal.

ANPR cameras linked to Delhi’s enforcement system

The integration allows violations detected by the cameras to be transmitted to the Delhi Traffic Police’s enforcement centre, where action can be initiated. The cameras are currently being used to detect speeding violations, allowing the traffic police to enforce prescribed speed limits on the expressway through technology.

“It’s an important step towards strengthening surveillance and enforcement on high-speed road corridors, where adherence to prescribed speed limits and other traffic regulations is essential for preventing road crashes and ensuring the safety of users,” Agarwal said.

Technology expands across Delhi’s high-speed corridors

Additional commissioner of police (traffic) Vijayanta Arya Goyal said the traffic police’s e-challan system has already been integrated with ANPR cameras installed on the Delhi stretch of the Dwarka Expressway, further expanding technology-enabled enforcement on high-speed corridors connected with the capital.

The department is also working to integrate more ANPR cameras and other intelligent traffic management systems installed on major highways and expressways with its enforcement system, Goyal said. The move is aimed at increasing surveillance, improving compliance with traffic rules and reducing road crashes and fatalities.

“Technology-driven enforcement will help promote responsible driving, ensure compliance with traffic rules and improve road safety for all road users,” Goyal said.

Officials said the ANPR cameras will also help track stolen vehicles and vehicles involved in road crashes and criminal offences.
