Delhi:Cash van guard shot dead, suspect steals Rs10.78 lakh

The police control room received a call regarding a firing incident with loot of a cash van in Wazirabad area.

The security guard of a cash van was shot dead, and Rs10.78 lakh were stolen by an unidentified assailant on Tuesday evening near Jagatpur flyover in north Delhi’s Wazirabad, police said.

Deputy commissioner of police (north) Sagar Singh Kalsi said around 5pm, the police control room received a call regarding a firing incident with loot of a cash van in Wazirabad area. “A police team rushed to the spot. During the local enquiry, it was learnt that at 4.50pm, a cash van arrived at ICICI Bank ATM booth near Jagatpur flyover for refilling cash. One person came from behind and fired at the guard and took away the cash placed inside the ATM booth. The guard was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared brought dead,” said DCP Kalsi.

He said that the guard has been identified Udaypal Singh (51) of Pachwa village in Ferozabad district in Uttar Pradesh. He added that CCTV footage from cameras in and around the ATM booth is being checked.

When contacted, deceased’s wife Sangeeta Devi (45) said that immediately after the last rites of her husband, she will go back to her native village with her children. “I don’t have any hope from the employer security agency as it used to give ₹15,000 per month against a contract of ₹18,000. Even the government is not going to give any financial assistance,” she said.

Udaypal’s brother-in-law Abhay Pratap Singh, who works with the same security firm, said the security staff is not insured by the company. “They have not even fixed ex-gratia for such incidents. Sangeeta’s life will be very tough now as she has two sons and no family assets,” he said.

Despite repeated attempts the security firm could not be reached for a comment.
