Faridabad police on Monday busted a gang of cyber frauds and arrested six people, who posed as government insurance agents and duped at least 242 policy holders across the country, including eight from Haryana.

Police said they recovered a mobile phone, SIM card, walkie-talkie phone and ₹1 lakh cash from the suspects. Police have launched a hunt for two more gang members, who are on the run.
Basant Kumar, station house officer of Cyber Crime police station, Faridabad, said the suspects ran a call centre in Delhi’s Janakpuri area to carry out their operations. “The suspects used to collect data of government policy holders from brokers. They projected themselves as insurance agents and called policy holders, coaxing them into sharing their confidential details. Later, they asked the victims to surrender their current policy and offered them a better policy with higher returns,” he said.
The officer said the victims used to fall prey to their offers and share all the details of their policy, following which the suspects would redeem their policies and transfer the amount into their accounts.
Kumar said the incident came to light after the suspects duped a resident of Faridabad of ₹8.5 lakh, a case for which was registered at Cyber Crime police station.
Police commissioner Vikas Arora formed a team and based on technical surveillance and human intelligence, the suspects were arrested from different areas. The suspects were identified as Ashok, Shaan, Amit, Ravindra, Pradeep and Tarun, all identified by their first name.
During questioning, it came to the fore that Ashok, Shaan, and Amit were the kingpins of the gang. “They used to transfer money to Ravindra, Pradeep and Tarun’s bank accounts. They have confessed to cheating at least 242 victims in the last one year,” said Sube Singh, a spokesperson of Faridabad police.
