A private bus on Thursday ran over a homeless man in north Delhi’s Gulabi Bagh, and the driver of the errant vehicle, after pulling the man out from under the bus, allegedly fled with the vehicle, leaving the man to die on the road, police said.

Another homeless man, Rishi Pal, who witnessed the accident and what had followed, filed a complaint with the police. Pal told the police that the injured man, who is yet to be identified, lay bleeding on the footpath and eventually died for lack of medical attention.

Many motorists stopped and looked at the injured man, but none of them took him to the hospital or did anything to save his life, police said.

On Pal’s complaint, a case of rash driving and culpable homicide not amounting to murder was registered under sections 279 and 304 of the Indian Penal Code against the bus driver at the Sarai Rohilla police station.

Pal told the police that it was a school bus and he knew the errant driver since he often parked his vehicle near the mishap spot. The police, after verifying the CCTV camera footage, said it was not a school bus.

Deputy commissioner of police (north) Monika Bhardwaj said teams have been formed to identify and nab the driver. “Efforts are also being made to identify the man who died,” Bhardwaj said.

Police said the accident took place on a road near Vaishno Mata temple in Gulabi Bagh area. Pal,45, told the police that a homeless man was sitting on the roadside where the bus was parked.

Around 7am, the driver started the vehicle and began driving it rashly. Just then, the homeless man started crossing the road. The driver failed to apply brakes on time and hit him. The driver jumped out of the bus to check on the man.

“He found the homeless man stuck under the bus. He dragged the bleeding man towards the pavement and left him there,” a police officer said.

Some minutes later, a passerby spotted the unconscious man and called the police. The victim was taken to Hindu Rao hospital where he was declared brought dead.
