Mar 24, 2023 07:09 PM IST

Gehlot said during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, Gandhi raised the issue of price rise, unemployment, corruption and violence. Instead of paying attention to those issues, the BJP-led government is taking repressive steps against him

Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the central government over the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi as a member of parliament. Calling Gandhi the voice of the nation, Gehlot said that he will come out stronger against “dictatorship.”

“The disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from Lok Sabha is another example of dictatorship. BJP should not forget that they had adopted the same method against Indira Gandhi also and had to face the consequences,” Gehlot wrote on Twitter.

The court in Surat sentenced Gandhi to two years in jail in a defamation case for his alleged remark on the “Modi surname.”

Gandhi was disqualified from the Parliament on Friday, a day after his conviction by the Surat court in a 2019 criminal defamation case.

Announcing his disqualification, the Lok Sabha Secretariat in a notification said that it was effective from March 23, the day of his conviction.

“Consequent upon his conviction by the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Surat...Rahul Gandhi, Member of Lok Sabha representing the Wayanad Parliamentary Constituency of Kerala stands disqualified from the membership of Lok Sabha from the date of his conviction i.e. 23 March 2023,” the notification read.

Earlier, while speaking to reporters at Banasthali Vidyapith in Tonk, Gehlot called the verdict against Gandhi “unfortunate”.

He said it is the duty of all to respect the judiciary but the manner in which the BJP was publicising the issue was “unfortunate”.

“This whole game which is being played intentionally is a threat to democracy,” he said, adding, the time to protect the Constitution has come.

Answering a question on the protest against the formation of new districts, Gehlot said the decision will enable the government to ensure good governance.

Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee in charge, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa on Friday addressed a protest rally being taken out against Gandhi’s disqualification.

Speaking to the protestors he said, “The British could not scare the Congress, nor can the BJP government scare us. We will fight with them till PM Narendra Modi regime is not uprooted. We have to save the country and the state.”

Speaking to the party workers he said that this fight will go on for a long time and Congress will not sit silent till Modi rule is over.

Rajasthan Congress chief Govind Singh Dotasara said the termination of Lok Sabha membership of Gandhi is the culmination of anarchy. “The Modi-led government at the Center is scared, this conspiracy is the proof of it,” he said.

“But truth cannot be suppressed nor can it be bowed down. We will struggle, fight and win from the road to the Parliament,” he added.
