Mar 21, 2023 07:56 PM IST

Rumours that the state elections would be advanced by a few months were being spread to misguide people, said Chandrakant Bawankule.

MUMBAI: Maharashtra Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Tuesday rebutted reports that the state unit has asked the central leadership to advance the state assembly elections expected to be held in October 2024 to hold the state elections along with the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

“The rumours are being spread purposely to misguide people. The assembly elections will be held as per the schedule and will not coincide with the Lok Sabha polls. The Shinde-Fadnavis government is doing a great job and has recently presented its maiden budget. The next budget for 2024-24 also will be presented by the government. We have neither submitted any such proposal nor is any such possibility of holding the two elections together,” he said.

“Maharashtra assembly elections are held six months after the Lok Sabha polls. There is no need at all to advance the state polls. Our primary goal is to win all 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra and we have not started preparing for the assembly polls... Rumours are being spread for cheap publicity and to create confusion among the people of Maharashtra,” the BJP leader said.

A state BJP leader who spoke on condition of anonymity said the decision on simultaneously holding the Lok Sabha and assembly elections was yet to be taken. “The central leadership will assess the impact on the Lok Sabha polls if the two polls are held together,” the leader said.
