Two people have been detained in connection with the incident, the police said.

Suman Das, the BJP’s Banamalipur mandal president, was rushed to Govind Ballabh Pant hospital in Agartala with sharp cuts.

“Two people have been detained based on the claims of the injured person. A case has also been registered. We have started an investigation,” said assistant inspector general (law and order) Jyotisman Das Chowdhury said.

Chief minister Manik Saha, Rajya Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb, assembly speaker Ratan Chakraborty and other party activists visited the hospital to meet the injured leader.

Saha, however, alleged that Das was attacked by Congress-backed miscreants.

“Such incidents of violence used to occur earlier. These miscreants went in alliance with the CPM. They talk about law and order, but in reality, they are responsible for deterioration of the law-and-order situation. We will seek intervention of the Election Commission,” the chief minister said.

“We have mentioned the names in the FIR. No one will be spared,” Biplab Deb said.
