A 50-year-old man accused in a sexual harassment case allegedly escaped from police custody on Wednesday while undergoing treatment at Sassoon General Hospital.
He was arrested in Satara in the evening on the same day, officials confirmed.
The accused, Santosh Sathe, a resident of Mhasoli village in Karad, was arrested by Karad police in connection with a sexual harassment case registered at Karad taluka police station.
On Tuesday, he complained of chest pain and was admitted to Ward No. 18 of Sassoon.
During morning rituals, the accused escaped, said the officer.
“Sathe was under Karad police security. On Wednesday, while two security personnel were occupied with their morning chores, he took advantage of the situation and escaped. He was later rearrested by Satara police on the same day in the evening,” said Ravindra Gaikwad, senior police inspector at Bund Garden police station.
A case has been registered at Bund Garden police station.
This is not the first instance of an accused escaping from Sassoon General Hospital. In 2023, drug kingpin Lalit Patil had also fled from the hospital before being arrested near Chennai.
