Sonny Baker to Lahiru Udara, no run

Just away from the bowler! Length and on leg, Lahiru Udara looks to tap it but the ball hits the toe end of his bat. It carries to the left of the bowler, who dives to that side but fails to reach at it. Dot again.

5:29 PM IST We are all set for the action to begin. Let's hope the rain stays away from now on. The umpires and the players make their way out in the middle. Pathum Nissanka and Lahiru Udara open up for Sri Lanka. Sonny Baker has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Let's play...
5:22 PM IST Update 5.20 pm GMT - It was raining a while ago, but the rain has stopped now. Let's hope it stays away.
5:22 PM IST England (Playing XI) - Jos Buttler (WK), Aneurin Donald, Harry Brook (C), Tom Banton, Jordan Cox, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Liam Dawson, Jofra Archer (In for Josh Tongue), Adil Rashid, Sonny Baker.
5:48 PM IST Sri Lanka (Playing XI) - Pathum Nissanka, Lahiru Udara, Kamil Mishara (WK), Charith Asalanka (C), Kamindu Mendis, Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Tharindu Ratnayake (In for Pavan Rathnayake), Dushmantha Chameera, Eshan Malinga, Dilshan Madushanka.
5:03 PM IST TOSS - England have won the toss and will BOWL first.
4:37 PM IST High stakes under Cardiff skies - Sophia Gardens promises a true pitch with good bounce that rewards both positive strokeplay and sharp seam bowling. Sri Lanka have their backs against the wall, but an aggressive opening burst could quickly tilt the momentum in their favor. Can England seal the series trophy tonight, or will the visitors mount an inspired comeback to keep the contest alive? Don't go anywhere, the toss is coming up next!
4:37 PM IST England chasing complete authority - England enter this clash full of confidence, but their focus will be on clinical execution across all twenty overs. While Harry Brook and Jos Buttler dominated the opener, the middle order batters had very little time in the middle. The hosts will want to ensure every batter stays sharp and builds on starts if tested today. With the ball, young Sonny Baker will aim to replicate his fiery spell, hunting for early wickets alongside the pace attack to stifle the Lankan scoring rate right from the start.
4:32 PM IST Lankan road to redemption - For Sri Lanka, bowling discipline in the powerplay is the biggest learning from the series opener. Their bowlers cannot afford loose deliveries against an explosive English top order, making early breakthroughs from Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana essential. With the bat, the top order needs composure rather than rushing into reckless shots under scoreboard pressure. Pathum Nissanka and Charith Asalanka must anchor the innings and build stable partnerships to give their power hitters a launchpad late in the innings.
4:32 PM IST Hello and welcome to Cardiff! We are in from Sophia Gardens for the crucial 2nd T20 between England and Sri Lanka. The hosts hold a 1-0 lead after a dominant 119-run victory in Southampton, and Harry Brook and his men will look to wrap up the three-match series with a game to spare tonight. For Sri Lanka, this fixture represents a critical battle to halt England's momentum, level the series at 1-1, and force a decider in Manchester.
4:29 PM IST ... MATCH DAY ...
8:55 AM IST Statement made, loud and clear - Well, that was a statement and then some from England as they brushed Sri Lanka aside to take the lead in the series. It was an early warning for the island nation about the challenge that awaits them, not just across the remaining T20Is, but also in the ODIs that follow. Sri Lanka had also lost both tour games against the England Lions and will now look to keep the series alive when the two sides meet at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. A night to forget - Apart from the toss, not much went Sri Lanka’s way as they were sent on a leather hunt, with Harry Brook putting on an absolute exhibition of ball-striking. England piled on 254 and, in reply, Sri Lanka could not even manage to bat out their 20 overs, eventually folding for 135. It was England’s 13th straight win over Sri Lanka in T20Is, with the island nation still unable to get one past them in this format since 2014. Questions over the bowling attack - Is it time to press the panic button and ring in changes in the bowling department? That will certainly be a question for the Sri Lankan think tank to ponder. The attack struggled to contain England’s batters, and once the hosts got going, there was very little respite. There were too many loose deliveries, too many scoring opportunities and not enough pressure at either end. On the pace-bowling front, Sri Lanka have the slingy Nuwan Thushara and the variety of the left-arm angle of Dilshan Madushanka as the options waiting on the bench. But whether they stick with the same combination or bring in changes, the fact of the matter is that Sri Lanka will have to be a lot better with their execution. Against a batting line-up as aggressive as England’s, there is very little margin for error, and Sri Lanka found that out the hard way. The batting needs to step up - Chasing 255 was always going to be tough, but what will hurt Sri Lanka more is that they simply could not put up any sort of fight. The England bowlers had a good understanding of what worked for Sri Lanka’s attack and what did not, and they bowled accordingly. The Lankan batters, though, struggled to adapt to the conditions and never really got going. Pathum Nissanka, Dasun Shanaka, Kamindu Mendis and captain Charith Asalanka all have a role to play in getting Sri Lanka back on track. England on a roll - Harry Brook's men are putting together quite a run in T20Is. They have now won 14 of their 16 completed games since the start of the year, with both defeats coming at the T20 World Cup earlier this year. One of those came against India in the semifinal, where they came close to pulling off a big chase. Since then, England have continued to put together convincing performances, and this one against Sri Lanka was another reminder of the ceiling this side has when everything clicks. Archer in line for return - In terms of personnel, Jofra Archer was rested for the series opener after playing all three Tests against Pakistan. Josh Tongue also featured in all three Tests, so England could look to manage their workload through rotation, with Tongue potentially making way for Archer. It will also be a special occasion for England’s latest T20I debutant, Aneurin Donald. The Wales-born batter showed promise during his short stay in the middle the other night in Southampton and will look to make the most of another opportunity on home soil. Form (Last 5 completed T20Is, most recent first) - ENG - WWWWW | SL - LLWLL. Pacers could hold the key - The 2026 edition of The Hundred saw the pacers dominate the proceedings at Sophia Gardens, and one can expect the seamers to have a say again. That could mean Sri Lanka might look to trim down their spin options and bring in an extra seamer. Sri Lanka have managed to win just 1 of their last 7 T20I series, and another series defeat is now staring them in the face. Can they find a way to turn things around in Cardiff? We shall find out together.
