Day 3Session 2
India beat West Indies by an innings and 140 runs

Commentary

9:20 AM IST Shubman Gill's side has started the home season just the way they would have liked, while Roston Chase and Co. will need to take the learnings from this game and come back stronger. A third win in six matches for India in the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle, while the West Indies have now lost all four of their outings. The action now shifts north to Delhi, where the second and final Test of the series will be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium from Friday, 10th October. The first ball is scheduled for 9.30 am IST (4 am GMT). As always, we will be with you early for the build-up. Until then, take care and goodbye!
8:41 AM IST Ravindra Jadeja is the PLAYER FOR THE MATCH for his brilliant all-round showing. Shares that during the break after the England series, he had been working on his fitness and skills at the Centre of Excellence. Mentions that batting at number 6 allows him to take his time and pace his innings. Says that he enjoys bowling on red-soil tracks as there is always some turn and bounce for him to work with. Tells that he is honoured to be appointed vice-captain for this series and he thanks the captain, the coach and the selectors for giving him this responsibility.
8:48 AM IST Indian skipper Shubman Gill is up for a word. He begins with a smile about his unusual streak of tosses and says that it is now six losses in a row, but as long as the team keeps winning matches, it doesn’t matter much to him. What matters more, he stresses, is the way the side has been performing together, and he calls this game a near-perfect one for India. Speaking on the batting effort, Gill points out that three different players - KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, and Dhruv Jurel - stepped up with centuries, which set the tone for India. Admits that both he and Jaiswal had starts but couldn’t convert, yet he is happy that others made it count. For him, this was a good wicket to bat on and the team maximised it well. On the challenge of managing three spinners, the Indian captain notes that when you have quality options like Jadeja, Kuldeep, and Washington Sundar, it is never easy to rotate them, but that is also the fun and beauty of playing cricket in India. Notes that there is always someone ready to make a difference, and that depth, he says, is a big plus for the side. Gill adds that over the last couple of years, this group has shown strong character, learning to fight through tough situations together. Mentions the England series as an example of how the team has grown, and believes that as long as India keeps learning and improving, he will be satisfied with the direction they are heading.
8:42 AM IST The captain of the West Indies, Roston Chase, says that it was always going to be tough after being bowled out for 162 in the first innings and then with the way India piled on the runs. Adds that it was not the performance they were looking for and believes that they need to bat better. Opines that in these conditions, where the pitch usually deteriorates going into Days 4 and 5, you need to post a big first innings total. Shares that he does not regret batting first, as there was always going to be some help for the pacers early on due to the moisture, but as batters, they need to see off that phase. Reckons that they did not make the batters play enough with the second new ball. Overall, he believes that batting is the main problem, and they must string partnerships.
8:28 AM IST Time for the presentation ceremony...
8:20 AM IST Mohammed Siraj is up for a quick chat. He says that he is feeling great and is pleased with how the team has performed with both bat and ball. Speaking about his three wickets in the second innings, he mentions that he really enjoyed bowling in Ahmedabad, though the pitch felt a bit on the slower side as the game progressed. On the batting effort, Siraj notes that everyone stepped up when required, whether it was Shubman Gill at the top or KL Rahul carrying forward his fine form from the England series. Stresses that collective responsibility made the difference for India. Signs off by saying it feels nice to get a couple of days off in this Ahmedabad heat, and he is happy to have contributed to the team’s success.
8:25 AM IST From there, the West Indies were left playing catch-up, with Jayden Seales carrying too heavy a burden in a depleted pace attack, missing both Josephs, Alzarri and Shamar. The spin trio, including debutant Khary Pierre, were also in for a long toil. KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, and Dhruv Jurel capitalised on batting-friendly conditions across Days 1 and 2, each scoring centuries to propel India into a commanding lead. It was Rahul’s first Test hundred at home since 2016, Jurel notched a maiden Test ton, while Jadeja rounded off an all-round performance with four wickets in the second innings to go with his century.
8:25 AM IST Earlier in the game, Roston Chase elected to bat first, but it hardly went to plan for the tourists. They lost five wickets in the opening session and another five in the next, eventually folding for just 162. Roston Chase, Shai Hope, and Justin Greaves offered brief sparks of resistance, but the visitors needed much more to challenge the might of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Kuldeep Yadav. Siraj led the way with four wickets, Bumrah claimed three, and Kuldeep chipped in with two.
8:13 AM IST A 286-run lead at the end of Day 2 was one India were happy with, and they decided to declare overnight. Sent in to bat, Tagenarine Chanderpaul was the first to fall. While the West Indies managed to survive the initial onslaught from Bumrah and Siraj without further damage, the challenge only intensified once the spinners came on. Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Washington Sundar made life difficult for the tourists. Alick Athanaze and Justin Greaves got starts and showed resistance, but their defiance did not last long.
8:23 AM IST A dominant showing puts India 1-0 up in the series! With a win margin of an innings and 140 runs, this marks India’s third-biggest victory against the West Indies in Tests in terms of runs. It was one-way traffic right from the opening morning, and the West Indies simply never managed to turn up for the fight. For a relatively inexperienced Windies side, it has been a tough learning curve, but one they will be better for as they move forward.

Kuldeep Yadav to Jayden Seales, no run

ballImg82.3kph

OUT! CAUGHT AND BOWLED! DONE AND DUSTED! India win the first Test match by an innings and 140 runs to take a lead of 1-0 in the two-match series. Kuldeep dishes a full ball, lands it in the rough, around off. Jayden Seales remains leg side of the ball and tries to take on the bowler as he was doing in the last couple of overs. He tries to smoke it downtown, but the ball is a bit full and ends up playing it back off the toe end of the bat. Kuldeep gets a bit surprised and brings both his hands in front to take it, but fails to grab, and the ball pops out after hitting his chest. He shows his composure and manages to pouch it on the second attempt. This is a big win for India to kick-start their home season, and they have been clinical in every department, showing their dominance.

6:43 AM IST Back for the Post-Lunch session! The players of India are back in the outfield, taking their respective positions. They need five wickets and would be looking to close out as soon as they can. Also, the two unbeaten batters of the Windies stride out, who would be feeling extreme pressure for survival. Alick Athanaze will resume the innings alongside Justin Greaves. India have handed the ball to Washington Sundar to start with after Lunch. With two slips and a short leg, Sundar to Alick. Here we go...
6:34 AM IST ... DAY 3, SESSION 2 ...
6:21 AM IST As the ball softens, there may be less bite off the surface than with the hard new cherry, but India’s spinners have footmarks to exploit. The challenge will remain stiff when play resumes after the break. That said, the tourists can draw some hope from the two men at the crease, with Justin Greaves having shown application against spin in the first innings and Athanaze doing the same here. Will this Test stretch into the third session of Day 3, or will India seal the deal in the second session? We shall soon find out. The second session will get underway at 12.10 pm IST (6.40 am GMT). Do join us then. Cheers!
6:07 AM IST Five wickets in the morning session have left West Indies staring down the barrel. With India declaring overnight, the West Indies' top order faced a stern test at the start of the day. Mohammed Siraj removed Tagenarine Chanderpaul in a probing seven-over spell, but the real damage arrived once spin was introduced. Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav combined to heap further misery on the visitors. Alick Athanaze, though, stood out with his decisiveness in footwork and offered stubborn resistance to see off the session alongside Justin Greaves.

OUT! TAKEN AT FIRST SLIP! Ravindra Jadeja gets another, and the resistance of Brandon King ends here! Jadeja offers flight and bowls it slower through the air. Pitches it relatively full and around off. Gets it to turn away slightly from there with some grip and extra bounce. Brandon King prods forward and looks to defend it. Though he plays with soft hands, he gets undone by some extra bounce on this occasion. The ball catches the outside edge of the bat and goes towards first slip. KL Rahul remains alert, crouching low to his left, and extends both arms to take it nicely. The on-field umpires refer it upstairs to check whether it is a clean catch. The third umpire confirms it is a legal catch after watching the replays. King walks back for 5 (18) and Windies are 34/3, trailing by 252 runs, in a precarious situation.

5:10 AM IST DRINKS BREAK! India are putting pressure on the Windies, who are doing their best to resist. This has been the situation in the first hour of the first session on Day 3. India declared their innings overnight, immediately putting the Windies on the back foot and making use of the early moisture in the pitch that allows their seamers to thrive. The openers played well initially, but a fantastic catch by Nitish Kumar Reddy ended their resistance. After a few unsuccessful appeals, Jadeja, too, managed to take the wicket of the other opener. Now, the onus is on two new relatively batters of the Windies to show resistance and not lose any more wickets in this first session. When will India play their other trump card in Kuldeep? Find out in the next hour with us!
