Oh, dear! There's the lifter from Jansen. Short and on off, kicking up from the pitch and it takes Smith by complete surprise. He tries to block off the back foot, but takes a painful blow on his right glove.

On a length, around off, Smith lets it through watchfully.

10:15 AM IST Hello, hello, everyone! It's time for the afternoon session to get underway at Kingsmead. Lunch would have tasted a lot sweeter for the Proteas. The Aussies, meanwhile, will have to pick up the pieces and rebuild, putting their middle order squarely in the spotlight. The South Africans spread to take their respective fielding positions. Steve Smith has Matt Renshaw for company, who walks in at number 5 with his trusty stache in full bloom. The towering Marco Jansen has the ball and will get the session rolling. Around the wicket he comes, with a couple of slips and leg slip in place for Smith who is ready to face. Here we go...
10:10 AM IST ... Day 1, Second Session ...
9:46 AM IST Woes up top for Australia - Travis Head had yet another new opening partner, this time in the form of Nic Maddinson, who last played a Test for Australia way back in 2016 and hasn't really played much First-class cricket in recent times either. The duo seemed under pressure right from the start, and Maddison failed to get off the mark for a long while before eventually getting out. Head too seemed undercooked and was the first one dismissed. An under-fire Marnus Labuschagne took the reins and actually looked good out there in the middle. Steve Smith had a slow start but took on Keshav Maharaj and got going as well. The duo stitched together 60 runs and seemed to be taking Australia safely through to Lunch, but Marnus got out on the final ball of the session, leaving Smith a whole lot to do. It will be interesting to see how the Aussie middle order fares, as conditions should be good for batting in the upcoming session. Stay tuned for the second session on Day 1, which will begin at around 10.15 am GMT.
9:46 AM IST Mulder showing his range - Wiaan Mulder has been prolific for South Africa in the red-ball format whenever he's got the chance, and in the absence of Kagiso Rabada, he took the new ball alongside Marco Jansen and bowled a lovely spell up top. Marco Jansen was a bit wayward and overstepped on a few occasions, but he did trouble the Aussie batters and got the wicket of Nic Maddinson. Mulder, on the other hand, got rid of the dangerous Travis Head with not his best delivery, but it was still deserved. Keshav Maharaj has been put under some pressure despite getting some good turn off the deck, and Anrich Nortje has been frugal without having picked up a wicket. However, Mulder has been the star, especially with that late wicket of Marnus Labuschagne, which could be massive in terms of this first innings.
9:46 AM IST LUNCH, DAY 1 - 9.36 am GMT - A dramatic end to the first session of this Test match. Well, it was looking like a pretty even session, but that wicket on the very final ball has handed South Africa the advantage heading into the Lunch interval. At 84/3 and with a new batter to come post-Lunch, Australia will have to rebuild again.

Wiaan Mulder to Marnus Labuschagne, no run

ballImg128.9kph

OUT! LBW! Can you believe it? Marnus Labuschagne has been trapped in front right at the stroke of Lunch. He has a word with Steve Smith, and rather reluctantly, he takes the review. Nip-backer by Mulder, on a length, in and around the off stump. Labuschagne shuffles across and lunges to block it out with a straight bat. The ball lands on the seam and jags back to go past the inside edge and hits the batter on the front pad. No bat involved, and the Ball Tracking has the impact as umpire's call, with the ball going on to hit the middle stump. The on-field call of OUT has been upheld. A tough pill to swallow for Marnus. South Africa finish the opening session on a high. At Lunch on Day 1, Australia are 84/3.

8:35 AM IST DRINKS BREAK! Time for a breather after an engrossing first hour of play at Kingsmead. The Protea pacers have been on the money right from the start, and even though the lines have been a tad too straight on a few occasions, both Marco Jansen and Wiaan Mulder have attacked the front pad relentlessly. For Australia, both openers are back in the dugout, and the senior duo of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne have the task of rebuilding the innings. The next hour will be a tricky phase of play as we have just seen Anrich Nortje start his spell in feisty fashion. Let's see which team heads into the Lunch interval on top.

Bump ball? Seemed like it. Very full by Jansen, on middle and leg. Smith plays the glance and it flies behind to leg slip, where David Bedingham flings himself to his left and sticks out the left hand to make a half-stop. A single is taken as the ball goes behind square leg.

A loud shout for LBW, but turned down. There seemed to be two noises, as was the case in the earlier Nic Maddinson appeal, but South Africa take the review this time. Hooping back into the right-hander, on the fuller side. Labuschagne's head falls over to the off side as he is beaten on the flick and wears it on the outside half of the front pad. OUT! STRANGLED DOWN LEG! South Africa take the review and, more importantly, they get it right. Swinging down leg, on a length. Head leans inside the line to play the pick-up shot but misses. Shake of the head by the umpire, but Kyle Verreynne is pretty confident, as are the other men behind the bat. Temba Bavuma eventually takes the review. The replays indicate that the ball has brushed the trousers on the way to the keeper, but has it made any contact with the bat? Oh, yes, there is a spike on UltraEdge, but it appears one frame after the ball has passed the bat, which falls within the margin the third umpires have been asked to consider. FOUR LEG BYES! Runs straight away for Australia. Jansen pitches the ball relatively full, gets it to drift in but angles it down leg. Nic Maddinson looks to flick, but the ball brushes the pads and goes past the diving keeper into the fine leg fence.

7:32 AM IST The national anthems are done, and it is time to get down to business. The crowd is sparse at the moment, but expect the numbers to grow throughout the day and over the weekend. There is not a cloud in the sky as Temba Bavuma and his men take the field. It will be the left-handed duo of Nic Maddinson and Travis Head to open the innings for Australia. Marco Jansen will kickstart proceedings with the new ball. Maddinson is on strike. Three slips and a gully await. Here we go!
7:28 AM IST We are moments away from the first ball, but before that, the two teams will line up for the national anthems. The match officials lead the way, before Temba Bavuma and Pat Cummins lead their respective sides out. It will be Australia's national anthem first, followed by that of South Africa.
7:29 AM IST A journey of resilience - It will be a special day for Nic Maddinson, who will be playing his first Test in nearly 10 years, and his story is a remarkable one. In April 2025, he was diagnosed with testicular cancer, and surgery alone wasn’t enough, as the disease had spread. He went through 9 weeks of chemotherapy, and just returning to competitive cricket was an achievement in itself. A century for New South Wales against Victoria just weeks ago, coupled with an injury to Josh Inglis, opened the door for Maddinson to join the tour of South Africa. A tough challenge awaits him at the top of the order, but having overcome so much to get back here, he will know better than most what it takes to fight through adversity.
7:22 AM IST Let's hear from the other camp - Alex Carey says that the build-up has been good, and they also played an ODI here in Durban a few days ago, and he's excited for this Test series. He then talks about the pitch, saying that it looks good, and he generally tries to stay positive with regard to the pitch, and hopes that there are runs in this deck. On the changes in the teams, Carey says that with Cameron Green being out with an injury, it changes things, and it's been 10 years since Nic Maddison has played and he's matured in those years, and fingers crossed that those coming into the team will have a positive impact. Carey goes on to talk a bit more about Nic, and mentions that it's all about what you do when life throws curveballs at you, and he has massive respect for Nic, and it's no surprise that he's in the baggy green. Carey ends by saying that it's an early start and everyone was excited to be on the early bus, apart from Nathan Lyon, and hopes that it shapes up to be a fantastic series.
7:20 AM IST A quick chat - Natalie Germanos has caught up with the head coach of South Africa, Shukri Conrad. Shukri shares that the preparations have gone well. Mentions that the focus has been on freshening up the players after the ODI leg while ensuring they have put in the required work. Overall, he is happy with how the preparations have gone. On David Bedingham batting at number 3, Conrad says the position has seen a few different players, but Bedingham has done well whenever he has featured for South Africa. He feels the batter is underrated and was a key figure in their run to the WTC final. Conrad adds that Bedingham enjoys batting higher up the order and comes into the Test in good form, making him a natural fit for the role.
7:05 AM IST Australia (Playing XI) - Travis Head, Nic Maddinson, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Matt Renshaw, Alex Carey (WK), Beau Webster, Pat Cummins (C), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, and Josh Hazlewood.
7:05 AM IST South Africa (Playing XI) - Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, David Bedingham, Temba Bavuma (C), Tristan Stubbs, Wiaan Mulder, Kyle Verreynne (WK), Marco Jansen, Simon Harmer, Keshav Maharaj, and Anrich Nortje.
7:08 AM IST The skipper of South Africa - Temba Bavuma says he would have batted first as well, describing the wicket as a good one and noting that the weather is favourable. Adds that they will now have to do the job with the ball, looking to exploit whatever moisture there is on the surface. On the team combination, Bavuma says the twin spinners add a different dimension to the attack, and he hopes the conditions will suit them. Asked about Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi, Bavuma says Rabada is close to returning and that his absence from this Test was a conservative decision. Ngidi, however, is in a different situation. Bavuma says they are excited to have Anrich Nortje back in the side and believes he will relish the opportunity.
7:10 AM IST The captain of Australia - Pat Cummins opts to bat first and talks about the surface, citing that there is a bit of grass and that, overall, it looks like a good surface. Cummins then goes on to say that there has been a good rivalry between the two teams in the last few years, and it's good to be back in South Africa, playing a Test match after so long. On being asked about the team, he says that Cameron Green is missing out due to an injury and Nic Maddinson takes his place in the XI, and Cummins also mentions that they feel Nic has settled in nicely. Cummins also mentions that competition for places, citing the example of the likes of Michael Neser and Scott Boland, who are unable to get a place in the playing XI.
7:02 AM IST TOSS - Time for the coin to go up in Durban. 'Heads' is the call from Pat Cummins, and he gets it right. Australia elect to BAT first.
7:01 AM IST PITCH REPORT - Shaun Pollock starts by saying that the pitch looks as good as it's been in the last five years and there's actually not much grass on it. He adds that South Africa have a couple of spinners and there's not much data for October, but feels that overall the pitch looks like a belter. Vernon Philander adds that it's good to see some greenery out there, but reckons that the pitch will play a bit slow and batting in the fourth innings will be tough. The duo then talk about South Africa's depleted pace attack and how crucial the return of Anrich Nortje is. Pollock mentions that the spinners will be key, and hopefully they get a full day's play because even if it is currently cloudless, it can turn overcast quickly at Durban.
6:52 AM IST A battle of wits - Temba Bavuma and Pat Cummins sat across the chessboard during Thursday’s photoshoot, and the symbolism couldn’t be more fitting. Every move will be weighed, every plan countered, and every mistake punished. The pieces are in place, and the first move awaits. There could be a bit of rain around on Day 2, but the weather is expected to be fine for the rest of the Test. For now, the sun is shining in all its glory as we get ready for the action to begin. Stick around as the toss is coming up next!
6:43 AM IST A long road ahead - Today begins a long stretch for the Aussies, with tours of South Africa, India and England in less than 12 months and New Zealand visiting in between. They know better than anyone what a slow start can cost, having been undone on Day 1 of that shock defeat to Bangladesh in Darwin in August. Pat Cummins has taken his time weighing up the team combination, and it remains to be seen whether Australia follow the hosts’ lead and go with two frontline spinners. History is on their side in Durban, where they have won their last three Tests. It was at this very venue where they began the 2018 tour with a win, only for it all to unravel in dramatic fashion.
6:38 AM IST The champions are back - South Africa return to Test cricket for the first time since November last year, and it’s their first home Test since January 2025. Since then, they have lifted the WTC mace and ended a long wait for a global title, but they will now have to shrug off the cobwebs and hit the ground running. The hosts are without Kagiso Rabada for the opener, paving the way for Anrich Nortje to return to the Test XI for the first time since 2023. The XI also features two frontline spinners, Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer, which suggests the hosts are expecting the surface to offer enough for spin to play a significant role.
6:34 AM IST The wait is over - Two heavyweights, years of build-up, and we are finally here. The finalists of the previous World Test Championship cycle and the top two-ranked Test sides are ready to go head-to-head. It all kicks off here at Kingsmead in Durban. It’s been 8 years since Australia last toured South Africa for a Test series, and that 2018 trip is remembered more for Sandpaper Gate than for the cricket. Well, the Aussies are back with a point to prove, and this rivalry has never been short on fire. So let’s get into it!
6:30 AM IST ... MATCH DAY ...
2:08 PM IST Back in the whites - The white ball has done its talking, and it was loud. Now the red one takes over. South Africa and Australia head into a three-Test series that follows the coastline, opening at Kingsmead, rolling on to Gqeberha and ending beneath Table Mountain at Cape Town. The Aussies are still smarting from the ODIs, where the Proteas won 2-1 and stretched the tourists' wait for a series win in the format on South African soil to 2011. Red-ball cricket brings a different test, and South Africa have a familiar script in mind. In 2018, the last time Australia toured this part of the world, the Proteas won the Test series at home, and it remains their most recent series win over this opponent, home or away. Table toppers battle it out - A big summer opens for the reigning Mace holders. South Africa sit second in the World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle, and with eight Tests waiting on home soil, they have a golden chance to turn familiar conditions into a ticket to the final. They have lost only one of their four Tests so far, so the platform is already in place. Australia, meanwhile, have no shortage of work ahead. Twelve Tests are packed into roughly five to six months, with a trip to India early next year and a trans-Tasman series against the Kiwis at home sandwiched in between. They arrive as the table leaders with a PCT of 80, having lost just a couple of matches in this cycle. Something will have to give when the leaders meet the champions. Reinforced and reloaded - South Africa's pace department is filling up again. The ODIs were played without the big guns, and the stand-ins did a commendable job, but the cavalry is now on its way back. Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi are almost back to their full strength and will be eager to get going. There is a catch, though. Batting coach Ashwell Prince says the team will hold off on the Rabada call for as long as possible. Ngidi, who is nursing a hamstring injury, will sit out the first Test, though his recovery will be monitored closely, and that keeps hope alive for the rest of a very busy summer. Even so, the opening Test attack hardly looks thin. Anrich Nortje is back in the mix after a three-year absence, and he joins Marco Jansen and Gerald Coetzee to share the new ball duties, with Mulder, Patterson and Bosch ready as strong backups. That is plenty of experience, even if Rabada doesn't start right away. The spin department is just as seasoned. Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer bring serious know-how to the table, and Senuran Muthusamy is lurking in the mix as another option. Ruthless depth to boast - If the bowling looks intimidating on paper, the batting unit is just as threatening. Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram have been here before, as heroes of South Africa's World Test Championship final triumph over Australia at Lord's, so the big stage holds no fear for the two. Around them, Ryan Rickelton and Tony de Zorzi bring the freedom at the top, while Tristan Stubbs and David Bedingham give the middle order the muscle to turn a decent session into a dominant one. The intrigue is the new face. Marques Ackerman, 30, is the only uncapped player in the group, and he has piled up more than a thousand runs in his last 10 red-ball appearances for South Africa A at an insane average, including a marathon and a career-best 256 vs Bangladesh A. Whether he gets a debut cap or not, that kind of form keeps the incumbents on their toes. Aussies dig deep for answers - Australia's batting sputtered against Bangladesh at home, and the Proteas on their own patch will ask far tougher questions. The tourists have barely landed and they are already patching things up. Cameron Green will miss the Durban Test with an abdominal strain, while Inglis fractured his finger during the ODI series and his participation is a bit doubtful as well. Nic Maddinson, the left-handed all-rounder, is back in the Test fold a full decade after he last featured, and his case rests on volume, with more than 7,800 first-class runs behind him. There is fresh blood as well. Sam Harper, the talented Victorian who recently struck a superb 128 in Puducherry against India A, earns his maiden Test call-up. He arrives as proper cover for the injured Josh Inglis, although Alex Carey remains the more likely man to take the gloves. Amid the injury scares, there's some hope as well. Marnus Labuschagne has found his timing at the perfect moment. After a rough year, the 32-year-old produced his first century in any format in 11 months during a two-day warm-up Test in Potchefstroom, right on the eve of the series. It is a welcome relief for a batter who went three years without a Test hundred, capped by three failures against Bangladesh. It is also a huge positive for a batting lineup that has looked very dependent on Steve Smith more often than not. The 'Big Three' lock in - Australia's selection puzzle is less complicated than it looks. With a full set of quicks available, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc form a seam attack that is hard to argue against, and on coastal venues that should reward bowlers, there is little reason to tinker. The real call is Green's replacement, and Beau Webster looks the sensible fit, since he keeps the balance of the side intact without forcing a bigger reshuffle. As for the spin debate, Nathan Lyon's experience makes him the safer bet, and Andrew McDonald's own words say plenty. He said, 'It would have to be quite compelling for us to shift into two spinners.' Unless the Durban pitch turns up with a surprise, that bar looks too high for Matthew Kuhnemann to clear into the XI. Team form (Last 5 Tests, recent first) - SA - WWWLW | AUS - WLWLW. A happy hunting ground? Ask the Aussies and they will say yes without blinking. Kingsmead has been kind to them, with three Test wins on the bounce in 2006, 2009 and 2018. Those were no squeakers either, as the margins read 112 runs, 175 runs and 118 runs. The common thread is that the first-innings total crossed 350 each time, so the side that batted big stayed ahead for the rest of the game. For South Africa, the hurt runs deep. Their last Test win over Australia in Durban came in 2002, with Steve Waugh and Mark Boucher in the thick of it as the respective captains. That is a long time to wait, and the Proteas will be desperate to break the hoodoo here. However, for a side that has won 13 of their last 14 Tests, including the 2025 WTC final against Australia, history may count for less than usual. Australia know the way around Kingsmead, but South Africa know how to win right now. And the hosts will be desperate to conquer it back. Should be a cracker of a series opener.
