The last team that India hosted for an ODI series was New Zealand in November. That was a three-match series but only one of those produced a result - a win for the hosts. The rest were washed out and India won the series 1-0. 

Meanwhile the decision to drop Ishan Kishan saw criticism from ex-pacer Venkatesh Prasad, who said"there is no way you drop a player for scoring a double hundred".

"Think fair would have been to give chance to a man who scored a double hundred in India’s last ODI, and in a series where India lost two games and the series.

"Have all the time in the world for Gill, but no way you drop a player for scoring a double ton," Prasad said in a series of tweets.

India's batting order looks fixed but it'll be interesting to see who between Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav will be included in the XI. While Iyer has proved his mettle on numerous occasions, especially in this format. 

Suryakumar Yadav has been enjoying red-hot form but is yet to make an impact in the ODIs. Maybe with the World Cup approaching India might want the 360 degree batter to establish himself in this format and give him the opportunity.

We could also see both the batters feature in the XI.

Rohit Sharma was asked a question on a similar note in the press conference on Monday, which the Indian skipper said is a “good headache” to have.

In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, India should bank on Mohammed Shami, for being the most experienced pacer among the lot. Mohammed Siraj too had a good outing against Bangladesh and is likely to retain his spot in the XI. It'll be interesting to see if India will opt for a third seamer and if they do who could it be? There are two options in the form of Arshdeep Singh and Umran Malik. 

Meanwhile, the form Kuldeep Yadav is in he could be given a get go ahead of his old partner Yuzvendra Chahal.

Having missed the T20Is, Rohit Sharma along with Virat Kohli, KL Rahul return to play their first series of the year. 

Rohit had a dreadful 2022 and will hope for an improved 2023. For Virat Kohli 2022 brought an end to his over 1000 days century drought and the former India skipper has not looked back yet. 

KL Rahul, on the other hand, has been heavily criticised by fans and few experts over his inconsistency, something he would look to get rid of this year.       

Jasprit Bumrah, who was expected to make a return in the series, was pulled out at the last moment, with Rohit Sharma confirming that the bowler was complaining of a stiff back. BCCI didn't announce any replacement for the pacer.

As per a fresh report on Tuesday, Bumrah might have to miss the upcoming New Zealand series and the first two Tests against Australia. Both the series will be played in India.

Rohit Sharma will open the innings with Shubman Gill, which the Indian skipper confirmed at the pre-match press conference. 

Ishan Kishan despite hitting a fantastic double century in India's last ODI, will have to sit out. 

KL Rahul will take up wicketkeeping duties.
