Bob Willis

Age 77EnglandENGLAND
Right-arm fast Bowler

Standing six feet six inches tall with an iconic, twisting run-up and an uncompromising competitive disposition, Robert George Dylan Willis served as the fearsome spearhead of the English bowling attack throughout the 1970s and early 1980s. Born in Sunderland, County Durham, the right-arm fast bowler generated tremendous pace and steep bounce through a distinctive long, curved approach, late kinetic acceleration, and a high release point. Despite enduring severe injury setbacks early in his career, requiring double knee surgery in 1975, he reconstructed his physical mechanics and mental approach to become one of the most durable and lethal seamers of his generation.

Willis made his Test debut in January 1971 during the fourth Ashes Test at Sydney, called up as an emergency injury replacement before establishing his place in the national side. Across a distinguished international career spanning 90 Test matches until his retirement in 1984, he claimed 325 wickets at an average of 25.20, an elite total that made him England's second-highest Test wicket-taker behind Sir Ian Botham at the time of his departure. His tactical masterpiece unfolded during the 1981 Ashes Test at Headingley, where he produced an extraordinary spell of 8 for 43 in the second innings to snatch a miraculous victory from the jaws of defeat.

In limited-overs cricket, Willis collected 80 wickets across 64 One-Day Internationals at an average of 24.60, helping propel England to the final of the 1979 ICC Cricket World Cup. Captaining his country in 18 Tests and 29 ODIs between 1982 and 1984, he led with tactical clarity and stern authority. Domestically, he represented Surrey and Warwickshire with distinction, capturing 899 first-class wickets across 308 matches through relentless physical perseverance.

Appointed an MBE in 1982 for his services to cricket, Willis transitioned into broadcasting following his playing career, where his dry wit and unsparing analytical honesty made him a revered voice in cricket journalism. Following his passing in December 2019, his legacy was further honoured by the creation of the Bob Willis Trophy, cementing his enduring impact on the English game.
