Age 39South AfricaSOUTH AFRICA
Left Handed Batsman

An unyielding warrior at the top of the order, Dean Elgar embodied the gritty, pugnacious soul of South African Test cricket across a twelve-year international career. Born in Welkom, Orange Free State, the left-handed opening batter built his reputation on courage, sharp judgment outside off-stump, and a willingness to absorb body blows on hostile, seam-friendly pitches. Operating without flashy excess, Elgar treated every innings as an intense battle of attrition, blunting fierce new-ball attacks to lay a platform for his teammates.

Elgar made his One-Day International debut against England at Cardiff in August 2012, before earning his Test cap against Australia at Perth in November of that year. Though his Test debut began with a pair of ducks, he quickly showcased his unshakeable mental fortitude by scoring his maiden Test century against New Zealand at Cape Town just two months later. Across an international career spanning 86 Tests and 8 ODIs until his international retirement in January 2024, he accumulated 5,347 Test runs at an average of 37.92 with 14 centuries. He etched his name into record books by carrying his bat through a completed Test innings on three separate occasions, equalling the all-time world record held by Desmond Haynes.

Appointed South Africa's Test captain in 2021, Elgar led the side with the same uncompromising, lead-from-the-front attitude that characterised his batting. Under his leadership, South Africa secured memorable Test series victories, including a famous home triumph over India where his unbeaten 96 in Johannesburg anchored a historic second-innings chase. On the domestic and global circuit, he represented Free State, Knights, Titans, Somerset, and Surrey, before signing for Essex following his international farewell.

Respected globally for his iron-willed resolve, Elgar closed his international chapter at Newlands in January 2024 as one of South Africa's most prolific Test run-scorers. He remains the modern prototype of the ultimate red-ball workhorse, remembered for his blood-and-guts resilience and unwavering service to South African cricket.
