Yuvraj Singh

Age 44IndiaINDIA
Left Handed Batsman

Born in Chandigarh on December 12, 1981, Yuvraj Singh announced his arrival on the world stage during the 2000 Under-19 World Cup, earning Player of the Tournament honors before receiving his senior ODI call-up later that year. Nicknamed "Yuvi," the left-handed phenom established himself as an aggressive middle-order batter, though stiff competition in a legendary Indian batting lineup limited his opportunities in the long format. Making his Test debut in October 2003 against New Zealand, he scored 1,900 runs across 40 Test matches at an average of 33.92, featuring 3 centuries and 11 fifties. His finest performances in whites came against Pakistan, against whom he scored all three of his Test centuries, headlined by a career-best 169 at Bangalore in 2007.

In One-Day Internationals, Yuvraj became one of the most destructive match-winners in white-ball history, scoring 8,701 runs in 304 matches at an average of 36.55, alongside 14 centuries and 52 fifties. He introduced his big-match temperament in 2002 by scripting a famous NatWest Trophy final chase alongside Mohammad Kaif, and later smashed a career-best 150 against England in 2017. In T20 Internationals, he amassed 1,177 runs in 58 matches, highlighted by his iconic feat at the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 where he blasted Stuart Broad for six sixes in an over to record a 12-ball half-century. His white-ball strokeplay was defined by a magnificent, high-elbow swing that generated effortless power over the leg-side and through the covers.

Yuvraj’s defining international moment arrived during the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, where his all-round brilliance propelled India to a historic world title on home soil. Named Player of the Tournament, he produced a masterclass campaign by scoring 362 runs and taking 15 wickets across nine matches, picking up four Man of the Match awards along the way. His performance was previously bolstered by his vice-captaincy during India's victorious 2007 T20 World Cup run, establishing him as a crucial big-game pillar under MS Dhoni's leadership. Combined with his lightning reflexes at backward point, his athletic presence in the inner ring elevated India’s fielding standards during the early 2000s.

As a useful slow left-arm orthodox bowler, Yuvraj claimed 111 ODI, 28 T20I, and 9 Test wickets, frequently acting as a partnership-breaker in major tournaments. Shortly after his 2011 World Cup triumph, he faced the ultimate battle off the field when diagnosed with a rare form of lung cancer, undergoing gruelling treatment before making an inspirational return to international cricket in 2012. Following his international retirement in 2019, he featured in global T20 leagues, launched the YouWeCan foundation to combat cancer, and mentored emerging Indian talents like Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma. Not many batsmen captured the imagination of a country like Yuvraj Singh did for India in his playing days, and he carried the aura of an absolute superstar.
