Delhi Police have arrested two auto lifters who used a toy pistol to hold occupants of cars hostage and used to flee with their vehicles.

Police said the gang, which used a magnet to open the steering locks, has targeted at least 100 vehicles.

Police identified the main accused as Kunal, a 40-year-old resident of East of Kailash, whose is allegedly involved in at least 21 cases of vehicle thefts and attempt to murder and his associate as Shahid (26) from Muzzafarnagar in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.

Shahid is involved in two cases of robbery and gangster act in Uttar Pradesh.

The two men were arrested following a raid on Tuesday in Shahadra by a police patrolling team, which spotted the duo with two stolen Maruti Breeza cars and recovered from them tools used to break open the locks of the vehicles.

Deputy commissioner of police (Shahdara) Meghna Yadav said Kunal told police he is an expert in stealing cars and can break open a car within 8-10 minutes.

“He said he used to sell the cars to his contacts for ₹50,000 to ₹60,000 each on their demand. Kunal told police they used a magnate to open the steering locks . We asked them to give us a demo. The duo used a magnet and broke the steering lock using other tools,” Deputy commissioner of police (Shahdara) Meghna Yadav said.

Police said Kunal has a case of attempt to murder registered against him.
