NEW DELHI: The additional medical superintendent (MS) of a Delhi government-run hospital reportedly fell mysteriously from the hospital’s fifth floor and succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday morning.
Dr RKB Chaudhary (61) was brought to the emergency of east Delhi’s Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital around 10.30am with spine injures. A section of the hospital staff claimed Chaudhary attempted suicide by jumping off the hospital building. No suicide note was recovered from the spot.
The police sent the body for a postmortem. “As per preliminary information, Dr Chaudhary fell from the fifth floor ward and suffered injuries to the head, back and hand. He succumbed to his injuries later in the day. We have initiated an inquiry into the matter,” said DCP northeast, Ajit Kumar Singla.
While some of his colleagues said he was tensed as he wanted to go for a deputation but was not being granted one. Others said that he was stressed and wished to take a voluntary retirement.
“It is unclear why Chaudhary took to the extreme step and the statements of his friends and colleagues are varying. The facts will become clear during the course of investigation,” a senior police officer said.
Dr Sunil Kumar, medical superintendent, GTB Hospital, said, “This is a sad incident and we cannot confirm if it was a suicide as nobody saw him in the act. Our doctors at the casualty tried their best to save him but could not.”
“Although external injuries were noted on his body, the exact cause of death can be determined only after the postmortem,” he said.
Dr Chaudhary was working in the hospital for the past 25 years, and according to the sources, of late he had been under severe stress due to work.
Dr Chaudhary was reportedly unwell and had already applied for voluntary retirement service. The outcome was to come on October 15. He was to retire in June 2016 but his services were extended for five years under the new Union government scheme.
Dr Choudhary is survived by his wife and two sons.
