Police said they came to know of the incident on Monday at 2.40 am, when locals informed them that the first floor of a building had collapsed in Mohan Garden.

They told police that one of the victims Sushil, had alerted them about his family members before collapsing onto the rubble heap.

The three who were killed in the accident were Sushil’s wife Manju,26, and his two kids Deepak,4, and Sanya,2.

A calf and a buffalo belonging to Sushil were also killed in the accident while a cow, a goat and a dog tied to the ground floor of the building were injured.

Sushil, who runs a dairy in his house, tied the cattle to the ground floor of the building. He was living in the house for the last 20-25 years.

Locals told police that the house had developed cracks because of the heavy rains that lashed the city this month.

They they even warned Sushil about the cracks on the balcony of his first floor house.

Police said some of the locals complained that the building had developed cracks because of the on-going pipeline work by the Delhi Jal Board.

Following the incident, local BJP and Congress leaders reached the spot and accused the local MLA of not paying heed to the locals’ complaints about the DJB work.

Sanjay, a neighbour, said that at around 2 am, he heard a loud bang and came out of his house, only to see that the first floor had collapsed.

Sushil, who was injured in the incident, with an iron rod piercing his abdomen, told locals that his wife and kids were buried under the debris.

It took the police and fire officials over an hour to retrieve the bodies but by the time they managed to get them out, the three had stopped breathing due to suffocation and injuries.

They were rushed to the nearby Mata Chanan Devi hospital, where they were declared brought dead.

Sushil was admitted to the hospital with serious injuries, police said.
