Ankur Kumar (19) — accompanied by a minor friend — lost control of the Honda City and hit Rajat and his grandfather Bhagwan Dass, who were walking on the side of the road, police said. The two were dead before they reached the hospital.

Kumar and his friend, both from the Alipur area of Outer Delhi, were stopped by locals and motorists and handed over to the police, who detained them. The car belonged to the friend's father but Kumar had a licence.

The two had decided to go on a joyride, said a senior police officer on condition of anonymity as he is not authorized to speak to the media.

The deceased were from a village in Sonepat, Haryana and had come to Alipur with other family members for the cremation of a relative.

They were walking to a bus stop on their way back to their village when they were hit by the car.
