The police official, Manoj Tyagi, is posted with the anti-auto theft squad (AATS) of southwest district.

According to the police, Tyagi, along with his informer, had gone to nab the notorious robber. The robber attacked Tyagi and he took out his pistol in self-defence. A scuffle ensued, during which the pistol went off and a bullet hit the robber in his forearm.

The police have identified the robber as Mohammad Mustaffa.

Police arrested Mustaffa and his two associates — Mohammad Mukhtyar and Mohammad Yusuf — for attacking Tyagi on duty. Mustaffa is allegedly involved in nine criminal cases, registered at different police stations in south and southwest districts of Delhi.

AK Ojha, additional commissioner of police (southwest), said that on Sunday at around 7.30 pm, Tyagi was out on duty to gather information about robbers and snatchers active in the area.

The official met his informer in Dwarka and was told that a notorious robber, Mohammad Mustaffa alias Sunny, has shifted to Matiyala from Vasant Kunj.

“The informer told Tyagi that Mustaffa was recently spotted in Matiyala village. In order to gather more information, Tyagi, accompanied by his informer, reached Matiyala where they spotted Mustaffa. The accused was perhaps waiting for someone,” said Ojha.

“As soon as Tyagi started questioning him, Mustaffa tried to flee,” Ojha informed.

The head constable tried to nab him when Mustaffa’s two associates arrived at the spot and they assaulted Tyagi with bricks and stones. The official received injuries and finding no way out, he took out his pistol in self-defence.

During the scuffle, the pistol went off and Mustaffa received a gun shot in his forearm. The three accused tried to flee but were later apprehended by beat staff and PCR van personnel patrolling in the area,” added Ojha. While Tyagi is undergoing treatment at Ayushman Hospital, Mustaffa is in Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, the police said.
