“The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is directed to file a fresh status report in the matter,” a division bench of justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Ajit Bharihoke said.

Senior advocate HS Phoolka, appearing for the civic agency, said so far as sealing and demolition of illegal structures in South Extension were concerned, actions have been taken.

The bench was hearing a petition, which was filed in 2001 by the New Delhi South Extension-I Residents’ Welfare

Association, seeking action against illegal structures, encroachment and running of unauthorised commercial activities in the area.

The DDA, meanwhile, informed the court that the Lt

Governor of Delhi was seized with the traders’ plea, seeking conversion of land use from residential to residential-cum-commercial.

Earlier, the MCD had sought two months time for concluding its drive against encroachment, saying “due to cold weather in case of properties which are occupied for part residences, action could not be completed”.

The bench had then asked the civic body to get its sealing and demolition actions verified by advocate Akshay Bipin who was appointed as the court commissioner.
