CPM in poll mode, says Govt won’t last too long
The Central Committee of the leading Left party that began its two-day meeting on Saturday has decided to busy itself with preparations for early polls, a Politburo member said, reports Jatin Gandhi.
Whether or not the UPA wins the trust vote on July 22, the CPM feels the government’s collapse is only a matter of time.

Unlike other parties, the Left do not have to worry about keeping its flock together for the July 22 trust vote. They are busy focusing on getting their house in order for the elections.
“Our assessment is that the Lok Sabha elections will be held in November. Even if the government manages to scrape through the trust vote, it will be difficult for them to carry on for long,” a CPM leader said.
The issue of Somnath Chatterjee’s defiance and refusal to resign from the post of Speaker will be discussed on Sunday but the Central Committee is all set to endorse what has so far been the official stand.
“We have already said that the Speaker will decide for himself. The matter was not even discussed today,” general secretary Prakash Karat said.
CPM Politburo member Sitaram Yechury will accompany Karat on Sunday afternoon to a luncheon meeting with leaders of the BSP and UNPA to discuss floor coordination. The issue of forging an alliance beyond the trust vote is also likely to come up at the meeting.
“It was discussed at the meeting that our tie-up with Mayawati is only for July 22, to defeat the trust vote and not beyond it,” a Politburo member said.
Some members of the Central Committee from West Bengal also raised the issue of the party voting on the same side as the BJP against the UPA sources said.
The party leadership has been at pains to explain that it is voting against the government to stop the nuclear deal irrespective of who else is voting against the deal.
