Traffic moved slowly at many places during evening peak hours. On some roads, vehicles did not move at all. South Delhi, central Delhi and east Delhi were the worst affected, said traffic police.

Waterlogging was reported from Connaught Place, Defence Colony, Laxmi Nagar, ITO, Lala Lajpat Rai Marg, Yusuf Sarai, Hauz Khas, Aurobindo Marg, Adchini, Khanpur, and Saket among many other places.

Traffic space was reduced to a single lane on Poorvi Marg and Paschim Marg near Outer Ring road and Hakesh Nagar due to heavy water-logging, said traffic police. Roads in Gautam Nagar, Sarojini Nagar Enclave, Malviya Nagar, Humayun Pur, Munirka, Green Park, Dakshipuri and Saket also were waterlogged, slowing down traffic.

Not just motorists, pedestrians and other road users had a tough time commuting on Tuesday. Metro users were at the receiving end as roads outside stations were flooded and people faced problems moving in and out.

"Potholes near Sarita Vihar metro station and Apollo Metro station slowed down traffic movement from Badarpur to Ashram on Mathura Road," said a traffic police officer.

Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit said the departments concerned had been directed to resolve the problem of waterlogging at the earliest.

"We are sorry for yesterday's water-logging. Suddenly, there is too much rain this month," she said.

"Tuesday's rain made it impossible for me to get to the Metro station from my house in Malviya Nagar. The roads were filled with knee-deep water and many cars and autorickshaws broke down. Traffic on all roads leading to central Delhi from south Delhi was choc-a-block. It was a complete nightmare," said Himani Joshiz, a commuter.

The control room of the three municipal bodies received a total of 29 calls of waterlogging and 17 calls of falling of trees.

Four cases of wall collapse were reported from the capital. No casualty was reported.
