Police on Monday arrested two people for stealing Rs 1 crore from a businessman’s office located in central Delhi’s Jama Masjid area.
Delhi Police recovered Rs 96.80 lakh in cash from Madan Lal, a 45-year-old artist, and Abdul Hasnain, a 39-year-old parantha vendor.
The theft had been reported on October 20 by Kunal Bansal, a cloth merchant.
Police said Hasnain was aware that Bansal kept cash in his office, and that he rarely visited it. He also knew that the office help went out in the afternoon and used that window to rob the place. Hasnain had a duplicate key made, using which he broke into the office, said deputy commissioner of police, central, Mandeep Singh Randhawa said.
Bansal told police that the stolen money was kept in a bag in the office. When the office boy returned from the market in the evening, the bag was missing.
“There was no clue left by the culprits in this incident and sources were deployed in the area to receive tip-offs,” said Randhawa, special staff of central district.
On October 29, police received a tip about the location of the accused and conducted a raid in Chippiwara area. Hasnain, who was caught at his house, confessed to the crime and gave up Lal as well. Police recovered Rs 92.80 lakh from him.
When Lal’s was apprehended at his house in Sita Ram Bazar, an additional Rs 4 lakh was recovered.
“Both men used helmets and gloves to hide their identity. It was difficult initially to catch them, but the secret information helped us catch them,” Randhawa said.
Lal paints portraits for art galleries in Delhi and is a recipient of the All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society while Hasnain sells paranthas in the local area.
