"The recent global phenomenon of price rise affecting essential commodities has been a grave concern especially for the marginalised population," Lt Governor of Delhi Tejendra Khanna said in his customary address to assembly on the first day of the budget session.

He said Delhi, being a trading city, has a limited set of options to ensure the availability of essential commodities as it has to rely on other states for their supply.

"However, as a responsive government, we have initiated multi-pronged measures including regulatory controls, enforcement action against hoarders and market interventions to check the prices," Khanna said.

During his speech, BJP MLAs shouted slogans and vociferously protested the government "failure" in reigning price rise. The party has also given a notice for bringing an adjournment motion tomorrow in the assembly.

Giving account of measures to check price rise, Khanna said recently the "Control Orders in respect of sugar, edible oil, pulses and rice have been amended to fix stock limits of dealers."

He said Government has been selling pulses at subsidised rates at 386 selected outlets in the city while wheat flour has been made available at lower rates at 328 outlets.
