The first off the block will be the Heritage Line that will open year-end and connect ITO in central Delhi to Kashmere Gate in the north. Singh didn’t specify the date.
The expanse of Phase 3 and the new signalling system were the reasons all corridors couldn’t be thrown open at one go, Singh told HT on Wednesday.
DMRC plans to introduce South Korea-made driverless, high-speed trains for Phase 3, which will take Metro to most parts of the city and beyond and is the biggest DMRC project.
Spread over two new lines Pink (Mukundpur-Shiv Vihar) and Magenta (Botanical Garden-Janakpuri west) and the Heritage Line, which is an extension, Phase 3 will run a distance of 136 km.
Noida residents heading to south Delhi will be the first to benefit when the Botanical Garden to Kalkaji stretch of the Magenta Line gets operational in February.
It will be in June when half of the 58.4km-long Pink Line from Mukundpur to Lajpat Nagar will open. The line will have six interchange stations and allow seamless travel between north, west and south Delhi.
“All physical work on the Magenta Line is almost over, but even after that we need at least three-four months because the system has changed,” Singh said. The remaining part of the line from Kalkaji to Janakpuri West will be opened in August.
Work on around seven kilometers remained awaiting land acquisition, he said.
The DMRC has set itself a September deadline for Phase 3, almost a year behind schedule, a first for the DMRC that prides itself in sticking to or staying ahead of calendar.
