“The baby was very small, newly born. It was so small it had gone through the drain pipe,” said a person who was in the washroom when the baby was discovered.

The baby was found inside the men’s room on the first floor of the casualty around 1pm. The area was immediately cordoned off and the reporter was told the washroom was under maintenance.

“The child was probably pre-mature and it is most likely the mother had delivered it in the wash room. A preliminary check does not show any foul play,” said a constable posted at the scene.

Doctors refused to divulge the sex of the child. “We have reported the details to the authorities. We are not supposed to speak to the media,” said the chief medical officer on duty.

The medical director remained unavailable for a comment.
