“From now on, motorists will have to carry only the driving licence and no-pollution certificate in original while driving.

The registration and insurance certificates can be kept as photocopies,” said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic).

The order was passed by the traffic police on March 30 and will help in two ways: prevent the loss of these crucial documents in case of vehicle theft and save motorists from police harassment. Several complaints of harassment and misbehaviour with drivers, especially women, have been received against the local police in the past.

Garg warned that vehicles would be impounded if motorists don’t carry their driving licence in original. “But the safety of women drivers and senior citizens would be taken into account before impounding their vehicles at night,” he said.

In October last year, the traffic police ran a prolonged drive against motorists who didn’t carry their vehicle’s documents, including the insurance papers, in original. Those who failed to show the papers were made to pay fines in court.
