After information that a pregnant commuter could deliver any moment, the DMRC within minutes had called for an ambulance.

Women staff, including the assistant station controller of the Central Secretariat station, whisked away the woman and the baby to the hospital soon after the delivery.

“We made the arrangements in the time it takes for a train to travel from the Khan Market to the Central Secretariat stations,” DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal said. Juli’s family members also praised the DMRC. “Everything went off well because of Metro officials and the help of women commuters,” Sanjit Kumar, Juli’s brother in law, said.

The DMRC will pay for their treatment at the hospital, the corporation’s chief Mangu Singh has announced.

“Both mother and daughter are doing well and the baby is healthy and has normal weight,” said a doctor, requesting anonymity. Blood tests were done on both to detect infections.

“Two station manager-level women employees of the DMRC have been deputed at the hospital as there were no women family members to attend to the mother and the baby,” said Dayal.

Metro authorities have decided to approach Juli’s family, based in Faridabad, to discuss a proposal to make the newborn the DMRC’s mascot. “Since our mascot is a girl guide, we are going to request the family to allow us to make the new born girl as our mascot,” said Dayal.
