India and Bangladesh on Monday signed a friendlier visa pact to ease travel between the two countries for law-abiding citizens and an extradition treaty that would enable the two neighbours to hand over criminals and terrorists on the run.

The extradition treaty does not, however, mean that Dhaka would be able to hand over Anup Chetia, secretary of the banned United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) immediately.

The two deals - signed in Dhaka on Monday - is the first significant forward movement in bilateral relations after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to Bangladesh in September 2011.

The two agreements signed by Bangladesh home minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir and home minister Sushilkumar Shinde would help put the relations back on track.
