IP varsity starts sale of admission forms

The undergraduate admission season has kicked off with the sale of forms at Guru Govind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU). Swaha Sahoo reports.

The undergraduate admission season has kicked off with the sale of forms at Guru Govind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU). And if last year’s figures are anything to go by, Delhi’s very own professional college is all set to give competition to giants like Delhi University and Jamia Milia Islamia.

GGSIP University, where most colleges reserve 85 per cent seats for Delhi students, sold a whopping 1.61 lakh applications for 14,810 seats in 2008-09 — an increase of 20 per cent over the previous year. In comparison, Delhi University, which offers 35,000 undergraduate seats, sold 1.35 lakh forms in 2008-09.

Market driven courses

BTech, BBA, MBA, law, BCA and MCA are the most sought after courses. Moreover, the number of applications for BTech doubled in two years – from 30,751 in 2006 to 62,090 in 2008.

“Market is the driving force behind the popularity of professional courses that ensure employment for students,” said Dilip K Bandyopadhyay, Vice-chancellor.

Welcome options

With over 70 programmes running in 10 university schools of studies and 90 affiliated institutes, students have welcomed the wide range of options provided by GGSIP University.

“Earlier, DU was our only option. But now many of the courses at GGSIP University have great faculty and placement is good,” said Sahil Arora, Class XII student applying for a Bachelors in Business Administration.

The good news for students is that the 2009 session will begin at the university’s new air-conditioned campus in Dwarka.
