The technology to the rescue: the biometric attendance system.
“The salaries of all these employees have been stopped,” mayor Dr Kanwar Sain said on Wednesday. “We’ll save about Rs 204 crore per annum this way. We’ve ordered a vigilance inquiry and sent the file to the lieutenant governor.”
Sain gave credit to MCD commissioner K.S. Mehra for his efforts to determine the exact number of MCD staff.
The corporation first installed the biometric system in August 2008. It now has 1,04,241 ‘genuine’ employees.
