Metro builds piers on busy NH 2 without hindering traffic flow

The Delhi Metro recently achieved a construction feat of sorts. It erected piers for elevated metro tracks on the busy Mathura Road (National Highway 2) without obstructing traffic even for a minute.

The civil construction team of the Delhi Metro transported heavy beams from the casting site to the construction site and erected them using heavy machinery during late night hours to ensure the movement of commercial vehicles was not hampered.

The NH2 is one of the busiest national highways and caters to traffic moving between Delhi and west and south India.

Delhi Metro is extending its Central Secretariat-Badarpur line up to YMCA Chowk in Faridabad under its phase-3 expansion project. The elevated section runs on the right of the highway (if one is going towards Faridabad from Delhi) up to Badarpur and left of the highway from Badarpur Border up to YMCA Chowk in Faridabad.

“While moving from left of the road to right, the metro alignment negotiates three curves. To take the alignment through these curves, six portals have been built on the 15 m wide free way, near the toll plaza that carries traffic going towards Badarpur Border from Faridabad but not using the paid toll road. Generally, the construction of the portals is done on-site as they are very heavy. But the movement of vehicles is so heavy on this stretch that we decided to cast the piers at the casting yard and bring them here to erect,” a senior Delhi Metro Rail Corporation official said.

This is the first time in the history of Delhi Metro that piers — measuring 15 metre in length and as heavy as 205-225 metric tonnes (MT) — were transported from the casting yard to the site. The work was completed within a week. If Delhi Metro had gone ahead with the on-site casting, traffic from Faridabad to Delhi would have been affected for at least three months.

“We employed two heavy cranes of lifting capacity of 500 MT along with one 250 MT trailer were pressed into service for the installation of the six portal beams on 12 piers at a height of 12 metres. The work was done between 11 pm and 4 am between July 7 to July 15,” an official said.
