Mining mafia's truck crushes cop in Faridabad

A truck allegedly belonging to sand mafia in Faridabad crushed a Haryana police officer under its wheels while the latter was trying to stop it near a police barricade early on Monday, police said. Prabhu Razdan reports.

Constable Mahavir Singh was deployed with a police control room van near Palla Chowk, where the police party have put up a barricade for regular checking of the vehicles. It was 3.30 am and the dumper truck sped through the barricade before hitting the PCR van, on which Singh was sitting. The truck run over Singh, killing him instantly.

Another PCR van, parked nearby, chased the truck as it entered Delhi through the Badarpur border. The speeding truck hit a Maruti Car and came to a halt. The driver, Pappu, tried to flee but was caught and brought back to Faridabad.

The truck was laden with sand, mined illegally out of Yamuna. It was headed to Delhi. The Police have also pointed out the role of another man, identified as Rajpal Chauhan - apparently the owner of the truck - who was driving along side the truck in a Santro car before it hit the barricade.

Singh's body was sent for post-mortem and and then handed over to his family. "We have registered a case of murder against driver Pappu and Chauhan", Abhe Kumar, DCP (Central) said.

Mining sand in Yamuna along its banks in Faridabad was banned by the high court in 2010.

The Faridabad police have intensified vigil along the Yamuna after the incident.

A father of two, constable Singh was a native of Jhajjar district in Haryana.
