Mistry novel: Activists flay Maharashtra

A group of activists including artists and academicians have decried the Maharashtra government for withdrawing Rohinton Mistry’s novel Such a Long Journey from the Mumbai University syllabus.

A group of activists including artists and academicians have decried the Maharashtra government for withdrawing Rohinton Mistry’s novel Such a Long Journey from the Mumbai University syllabus.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Safdar Hashmi Memorial Trust termed the decision to withdraw the book an assault on autonomy of an educational institution. They also said the state government was increasingly being driven by Shiv Sena’s agenda.

“It is deeply alarming that the freedoms of academic research andartistic expression are increasingly being curbed by the threat of mob violence and through unconstitutional means,” the statement read.
