"I have not praised Modi. I have been misquoted," Vastanvi said.

Vastanvi, who recently became the chief of the seminary in Uttar Pradesh's Deoband town, was said to have praised Modi and said that it was time to move on from the 2002 Gujarat riots. His comments drew widespread criticism from different quarters of the Muslim community.

An MBA graduate, Vastanvi, who hails from Surat in Gujarat, said he has full faith in Indian democracy and it will ensure justice.

"I have full faith in the Indian democracy. The people who have suffered in Gujarat will get justice and the culprits will get punished," he said adding that the massacre in Gujarat could not be forgotten.

Vastanvi was in Delhi on his way back to Deoband in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur district.
