Local residents who had gathered at the spot informed the police about the incident. What is more shocking is the fact that the newborn's umbilical cord was intact.
The police said the body was discovered floating in Kishanganj sewage drain in Sarai Rohilla around 10am.
"It seems to be a case of female foeticide. The child did not even have a slim chance of surviving. The doctors told us that the child was just a few hours old and was thrown into the drain soon after she was born," said a senior police officer on condition of anonymity.
