This time, the 360-cars capacity underground parking lot has been opened at E block, Hauz Khas. It will cater to the parking requirements of traders and shoppers that frequent the area.

The facility will be opened for the public from March 1 and will be free of cost on a trial basis so that people can get used to the services and the system.

Once the contractor for the facility is finalised, it will be converted into a paid parking lot.

A dream project of former mayor Aarti Mehra, the three level underground parking has been constructed at a cost of R31.4 crore.

On February 16, the MCD had inaugurated a 1,020 capacity parking at Parade Ground in Chandni Chowk. Mehra said that the top of the Hauz Khas parking would be converted into a green zone, following a plantation drive.

Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley who inaugurated the parking at Hauz Khas, emphasised on the need for better public transport in the city. "Only a strong public transport system can discourage citizens from using their own vehicles," he said.

Jaitley added that there was a need for ‘no vehicle zones’ in the city, especially in commercial areas such as Connaught Place, South Extension and others.

"Community parking needs to be developed in these areas so that citizens can park their vehicles here and commute to the market using public transport, thereby reducing congestion," he said.
