The Delhi traffic police are set to intensify prosecution of those who drive with headlights on high beams. This time they will focus especially on fog-prone areas of the city.

The onset of haze increases the total number of accidents on city roads every year. Delhi registered four fatalities last year and eight in 2009.

The police are looking to bring the figure down to zero this year. They believe that encouraging people to drive on low beam will help them meet their target.

"High beams get reflected back in the fog and impair visibility. This spurts the number of accidents on foggy winter nights. Motorists should turn on fog lights if visibility is reduced," said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic).

Some of the fog-prone areas in the city include DND flyover, national highway 1, Mukarba Chowk, Model Town, Kingsway Camp, part of Outer Ring Road and some parts of central Delhi.

“We are close to meeting our target of keeping road fatalities below 2,000 this year. This will be the lowest since 2005. So far, 1,700 people have been killed in roads accidents,” Garg added.
