A number of Resident Welfare Associations across the city have protested the MCD’s move of sending notices to residents, asking them to bring their property tax records to MCD office. According to the RWAs, the civic agency has served notices to approximately two lakh residents to bring their property tax paid records to concerned Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) offices of the area.

“A delegation met the assessor collector on Tuesday and has asked the MCD to withdraw this order with immediate effect. By serving this notice, all that the civic agency is doing is harass residents,” said Anil Bajpai, an RWA member from east Delhi. According to the RWAs, notices should have been served to those property owners who have not been paying property tax to the civic agency.

“Why are those who have been regularly paying taxes to the MCD being asked to show their records? It’s unfair,” he added. There are approximately 30 lakh properties in the city but the civic agency is able to collect tax only from nine lakh properties. The civic agency has been conducting surveys to nab defaulters.
