In an interview to TV channel Times Now's editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami, Singh said that the media had reported Rahul Gandhi's statement wrongly.

"All he had said that he would like to work for the party and was more concerned about the issues that affects the country. All this does not mean that he does not want to be prime minister, Singh said.

He added: "Let the time and opportunity come. Why read too much in what he had said?"

He said that "if people give clear mandate or the Congress emerges as the single largest party with substantial number of seats, then it would be for him (Rahul Gandhi) to decide".

Singh said that the Congress Parliamentary Party (CCP) would decide who would be its leader.

Singh said that Rahul Gandhi could not be compared with Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, as the latter was the "creation of the media".

He said that Rahul Gandhi had "travelled across the India" and "knew the pulse of the people".

Singh dared the BJP leadership to name Modi as their prime ministerial candidate for 2014 general elections. He said that the much hyped development of Gujarat was not a fact.
