Teachers at Swami Shraddhanand College, Alipur, said the seats of B.Com (programme) were being distributed among other disciplines.

"There are over 400 seats for commerce (both programme and honours) in the college. As per the principal, under the new four-year programme, only 240 seats will be allotted to the commerce stream. The proposal is to distribute the remaining seats among the science disciplines," said PV Khatri, who teaches commerce at the college.

As per the faculty members, some other colleges were also mulling to do the same.

"When it comes to B.Sc and BA programmes, seats can be distributed among a variety of subjects such as economics, history, political science, physics or chemistry as per the faculty and infrastructure available. Students of B.Com programme, meanwhile, will study papers in English, Hindi and economics. The seats may be distributed among these courses as well," said a teacher of a college in North campus.

However, some fear that the university may lose out students to IP University, which will start a B.Com (honours) course from the coming academic session.

"A lot of students, who want to go in for an MBA, opt for Commerce. If the number of seats decreases, students will choose IP University," said Khatri, who has taught at a college affiliated to IP University.

The cut-offs for B.Com (honours) are among the highest in the university.

Colleges have to submit a final list of courses along with the number of seats to the university administration by Friday.

"We are already done with the redistribution in our college. Since honours courses for the subjects were being taught as programme courses till last year, the process was easy for us. There has been no workload reduction in our college," said Pradyumn Kumar, principal, Hindu College.
