Six armed robbers targeted the residence of a Delhi Traffic Police Inspector on Sunday night in northeast Delhi.

Robbers struck at the house of Inspector Sanjeev Verma posted with the Research and Development department of the traffic police in RK Puram on Sunday when the family was celebrating his son’s birthday.

A similar incident had taken place on August 17, when four armed robbers broke into a house in Vivek Vihar in East Delhi, while Surender Dadwal and his family were celebrating his granddaughter’s fourth birthday.

The assailants got away with Rs. 7 lakh in cash and jewellery after they held the friends and family members.

Police said Sunday’s incident was reported at 9:15 pm in A-Block, Ashok Nagar in Man Sarovar Park in Northeast Delhi.

Three of the assailants allegedly held hostage four women, four children and two men inside the house at gunpoint while the other three ransacked the house, looking for cash and valuables. Verma was out on an errand when the incident took place. In all, the robbers took jewellery worth Rs 1.5 lakh and Rs. 5,000 in cash.

“The main gate and the main door to the house were not locked as it was my son’s birthday. The guests left at around 8.00 p.m. About six robbers, all masked with handkerchiefs and armed with revolvers, walked into the house,” said Verma.

“My father, brother, aunt and mother were on the ground floor, while my wife and the kids were upstairs.”

Police said that the robbers made the relatives assemble in the ground floor verandah. Three kept a watch on the group and three others went upstairs and told the children their grandmother was calling them.

They then brought Verma’s wife downstairs at gunpoint. The family was then made to stand together in the verandah as the robbers ransacked the house.

Sanjeev said that he went back home half an hour after the incident.

They added that Sanjeev’s brother Rajiv who is with the Transport Department, tried to intervene but was threatened.

After the robbers left, Rajiv made a PCR call. The police have registered a case of robbery against unknown assailants.
