Rs. 5,000 fine for Delhi's errant auto drivers

Errant auto drivers would be slapped with Rs. 2,000 fine for refusal, misbehaviour, overcharging, harassment and operating without a meter for the first violation and Rs. 5,000 for repeat violations.

To discipline autorickshaw drivers, the Delhi traffic police plan to wield a big stick.

Errant auto drivers would be slapped with Rs. 2,000 fine for refusal, misbehaviour, overcharging, harassment and operating without a meter for the first violation and Rs. 5,000 for repeat violations.

Traffic police currently issue challans of Rs. 100 for these violations. But, traffic police feel the fine is neither stiff nor a deterrent.

Auto drivers would also be booked for permit violation and get a court notice of Rs. 2,000.

"We've already issued a circular and will soon start booking violators," said Anil Shukla, additional commissioner of police (traffic).
