Safal, Nafed to sell onion at R35 per kg

The decision was taken after a review meeting. “We have taken stock of the situation. It was found that the supplies were satisfactory. I have directed the commissioner (food & supplies) to write to Mother Dairy to bring down the cost at R35 per kg,” said Delhi’s food and supplies minister Haroon Yusuf.

After onion prices had hit the roof last Monday owing to supply shortage due to unseasonal rains in feeder states, government had intervened and facilitated the sale of onions at wholesale rates in public-owned and cooperative retail outlets. “After all, Mother Dairy, too, has some social responsibility,” explained Yusuf.

Since Friday, all 288 outlets of Mother Dairy’s Safal, 13 of National Consumer Cooperative Federation, five outlets of Nafed, a farmers’ cooperative, and select outlets of Kendriya Bhandar have been selling the vegetable at R40 per kg, which had a cascading effect on the retail prices in open market.

The retail prices in the open markets, which had touched R80 per kg in some localities, came down to R50-55 per kg after Friday.
