SC dismissesPIL to lower MP age

The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a PIL seeking lowering of age limit from 25 years to contest elections for becoming a member of parliament.

The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a PIL seeking lowering of age limit from 25 years to contest elections for becoming a member of parliament.

The petitioner contended lowering the age to 18 or 21 years would encourage the youth to take politics as profession by choice and it would further help in reducing largescale agitations and destruction of properties.

"We cannot pass directions on such types of prayers," a Bench headed by Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan said.

The advocate, appearing for the petitioner, said the right to choose profession of politcs is a fundamental right.

However, the Bench expressed displeasure over the submission and said "can we apply the same reasoning for the appointment of judge"?
