Seniors beat up two freshers at DU college

Two cases of alleged ragging were reported in Delhi University colleges on Wednesday.

In the first case, a first-year student of BA Programme at Satyawati College (evening) alleged that he was beaten up by a large group of senior students when he was leaving the orientation programme on Tuesday evening, the second day of college.

Puneet Kumar, a resident of Sonepat, went back to his hometown after the incident.

Kumar said he was taken to the bathroom where there is no CCTV and hit with broomsticks. Some seniors then heard his screams and rescued him.

“We were on our way to class when we heard screams from the bathroom. We saw a large group of men beating two freshers and rushed to their help. One of us took Puneet to the hospital while I went to the administration to file a complaint. It was a clear case of ragging by former students who still hang around in college. No one has taken any concrete action till now. We were called to the police station on Wednesday evening and our statements were recorded only after we raised our voice against the inaction,” said G Raj Singh, a second-year history student at the college.

The college has set up a committee to look into the matter.

“Students are not coming forward to give their version and identify the culprits. We have set up a committee to probe the matter,” said SK Joshi, principal, Satyawati College (evening).

Allegations of inaction were rubbished by a senior police official. “We are conducting a preliminary investigation into the matter before registering a case,” the officer said.

In another case, a fight broke out between members of the National Students Union of India and a few first-year students, following which the newcomers were insulted.

The new students, however, have not filed any complaint with the college authorities and have not approached the police either.
